The Vow is the first play in a series written around the traditional Christian marriage vows.
Vi and Arthur are in their eighties and have been married for over sixty years. They had one daughter who died when she was a small child. They are happy in each other's company and save for the daily visits of the district nurse Eilean, they live more or less isolated from the outside world.
Arthur has recently suffered a series of strokes and their 'vow' to each other is that they will always be together. Forever. Even death will not part them.
When we first see them, Arthur has just wet himself and Vi is helping him to change his clothes before the nurse arrives. As Arthur's health continues to slide downhill, Vi conceals the true extent of his illness from Eilean, who, she fears, will alert their GP who in turn will have Arthur admitted to hospital. As they relive the memories of their years together, Vi prepares them both for the inevitable.
This is a funny yet moving drama which has literally moved audiences and critics to tears.
The Vow was first performed at the Abbey Theatre Festival of Original Playwriting 2000 where it won the award for Best Play. The original cast of Alan Coates, Betty Rose and Rosemary Goodman went on to perform the play at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2001. |
