The Ladies - COMEDY****
The idea - women spilling their hearts out in loos - may not be original, but everything else about the play is.
The writers, Rebecca Neal (Rebecca Russell) and Jenny Wafer, introduce us to three pairs of women brought together in the ladies’ toilet of a church hall. The scenes take place on New Year’s Eve, giving good scope for the characters to do some long, hard navel-gazing, and the settings - a Women’s Institute lunch, a playgroup party and an over-16s disco - provide excellent comedy material.
Rebecca Neal and Kate Russell are highly convincing in all their roles but the most interesting characters are played by Neal. She is superb as the bitchy Mavis, a Rosemary Conley-type fitness guru who has rocketed to fame and back again, and great fun as the sex-mad teenager Kate, and Fliss, the mumsy playgroup leader who talks in toddler-speak.
The Victoria Wood type humour should appeal to most, and the production is cleverly done. In between scenes, the caretaker character does his own little comedy act. This is Tidemark’s first production; may there be many more. GILLIAN DRUMMOND
