Odysseus and the Really Freaky Monsters - Children's Show Review ***
With better jokes on board than many of the supposedly grown-up shoes on the Fringe, this Tidemark Theatre production of the familiar epic story of Odysseus sails along very nicely indeed. Odysseus, or Od for short, sails around the world, incurring the wrath of the gods and battling various monsters and sorcerers along the way. The monsters, including a cyclops and a fearful sea serpent, really are as freaky as the title says, but youngsters are more likely to be entertained than frightened. And adults get some lasughs, too: The seven-headed Scylla becomes - surprise, surprise - the seven-headed Cilla Black and there's a very subtle gag involving the blinded cyclops coming back on stage because he can't find his exit. A well thought-out introduction to this classic story, aimed at ages four to 12, and a fine 70 minutes of anyone's time.
